On-site residence for multiply disabled, blind, and visually disabled adults
The SFZ Chemnitz residence hall is a special form of accommodation for disabled and severely multiply disabled individuals. Our typical residents are adults with a visual impairment and the blind. » Link Photo Gallery
There are two groups in the residence hall. The first attends the associated workshop for the visually impaired. The second group participates in the internal day-to-day life of the residence hall. We live together, and in doing so, we supplement and support each other.
It is very important to us to be able to respond to each individually, which is why we take various levels of self-sufficiency into consideration.
For the residents, our accommodation offers plenty of space and quality of life. Our goal is to make sure that all of our residents have a sense of comfort and community, which we achieve with trained support staff and a proven philosophy.
We have space for 28 residents in the hall, which is located in Building 38 in our facility and is open 365 days a year.
Our open-minded team of rehabilitation specialists cares for and supervises all residents. The team is supported by external physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists. Interns and civil service volunteers are also available occasionally. All work closely together with the experts from SFZ. Social workers from the Life and Work Department are also there to help you.
We strive to make a comfortable, homey environment for all of our residents. We help our residents to learn simple domestic tasks, to practice routes, and we listen to problems and help to resolve conflicts. Those residents who attend our workshop for the visually impaired learn to become self-sufficient through gradually increasing responsibility.
Any residents not attending the workshop will acquire security and endurance through a steady routine. Residents eat together, listen to and play music, relax in the common room, play sports in the gymnasium, and get to know the world on field trips and excursions. We make craft projects out of fabric, cork, wood, paper and other materials, which promotes focused concentration, endurance, creativity, and communication. Even simple sorting projects help residents to acquire these skills. To help blind and visually impaired residents to connect with their environment, we work with a variety of sounds, smells, and multi-textured materials. Many activities are quite similar to daily workshop tasks. The majority of these activities take place in the residence hall. Physiotherapy, speech therapy, and swim therapy are integrated into the daily routine.
Parties and excursions are planned together. Residents are welcome to take advantage of our on-site leisure activities including singing in the choir, our many sports clubs, the theatre, and the cinema.
We hope that our facility sounds like a welcoming place to be. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.
To be accepted into our residence hall you should submit a generic application to the relevant social service bureaus to cover the costs. Let us know if you need any help or further information.
