Orientation and Mobility (O & M)

People who are affected by severe visual impairment or blindness are restricted to a large extent in their freedom of movement and their ability to orientate.
In special training in orientation and mobility (O & M) blind and visually impaired people are taught skills that enable them to get around in their environment, selectively, safely and independently.

  
What does the training offer?

The following teaching areas and subjects are priorities and point to opportunities for training in O & M, without each participant having to go through each area referred to.

  • promotion of awareness including optimal utilization of visual and / or hearing abilities, of touch and smell
  • techniques for sighted escort, physical protection techniques, search techniques
  • Learning to deal with the stick (or adapted mobility assistance)
  • Basic orientation strategies including working with prominent points, plans, various environmental samples
  • participation in traffic, including traffic and intersection analysis, various road crossings
  • use of electronic means as an obstacle detector
  • Monocular training
